University of Tartu Narva College is delighted to invite you to our 9th International ELT and CLIL Conference “New Horizons and Challenges in CLIL and ELT” October 25-26, 2023, an ELT and CLIL conference which continues the traditions of international ELT conferences hosted by Narva College since 2006.

The conference aims at providing a platform for the discussion and dissemination of research and good practices in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) with a special focus on research insights, innovative ideas and hands-on techniques.

There are three key conference sub-themes:

  • English Language Teaching and Learning (ELT)  
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
  • Teacher Training for Multilingual and Multicultural Schools

The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners from different countries willing to share their researches and experiences in the field of English language teaching and learning and CLIL.

The aim of the conference is to consolidate the efforts of specialists who are studying the past and present of border regions. It will bring together the researchers that are interested in the development of border regions as cultural and historical zones of mutual influence and interaction within the context of the globalization process.

The FOLLOWING TOPICS ARE GOING TO BE DISCUSSED AT THE CONFERENCE

  • The history of evolvement of a border region: the relationships of neighboring States;
  • Border regions and cities’ development and interaction of their cultures;
  • The language of rural and country population of a region;
  • Education and its policy in a border region. Multicultural education and practice of educational institutions of a border region;

We intend to pay attention to the need of bringing cultural awareness and innovations into content and language learning, thus providing a focus for dissemination of research in this field and discussion of best practices of multicultural/ multilingual education.

There are four key conference sub-themes:

  • Multicultural Education and Support of Cultural Identity: development of tolerance and cultural identity; cultural identity in multilingual/multicultural environment; native language and culture in secondary and upper-secondary school; the role of university to support and develop students’ cultural identity;
  • Foreign Language Teaching and Learning: development of e-learning support and study materials; foreign language for special purposes; language level assessment; language level exams vs state exams;
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL): school and university content teaching in a foreign language; traditions and innovations in CLIL; content teaching in mixed level language groups; teachers’ cooperation with parents to support content teaching in a foreign language;
  • Teacher Training for Multilingual and Multicultural School: in-service teacher training for schools and kindergartens of national minorities; teacher training for border areas.

The purpose of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners from different countries who are eager to share their researches and experiences in the field of multicultural studies and foreign language teaching and learning. In this way, we hope to contribute to the field and bridge the gap between research and practice.

In 2006 - 2008 Narva College of the University of Tartu is implementing a European Social Fund project “Improving the Quality of Multicultural Component in Teacher Training”. The project aims at developing professionalism in the field of multicultural and multilingual education and improving the quality of professional activity of teachers in Estonia.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the international conference on issues of multiculturalism, interculturality and multilingualism, which will take place on April 17 - 19, 2008 in Narva College of the University of Tartu.

The following issues will be discussed:

  • education as an aspect of intercultural dialogue;
  • methods and techniques of multicultural education;
  • the role of education in preserving and developing identity in multicultural society;
  • aspects of conducting a lesson in two languages;

Come discover some new and old practices to put to work in your classroom at the 2008 Narva College ELT Conference "Secrets of teaching EFL." During the two-day event, participants will uncover many teaching treasures they can take back to enjoy with colleagues and students.

The Conference will focus on the following areas:

  • Fresh and practical approaches to teaching English at the secondary school, college, and university levels
  • Issues and strategies in the EFL classroom
  • Using film, literature, drama and electronic media for teaching English at all levels

The purpose of this conference is to bring together English teaching professionals from different countries to share with each other their most closely-guarded professional secrets of teaching and learning English. It is envisaged to become a forum where the renowned professionals will let their younger colleagues into the secrets of the mastery of the trade. On the other hand, the representatives of the “fresh blood” of English language teachers will have a chance to give their perspective on how to tackle the challenges posed by the new generation of students and still get the kicks out of the job they are doing. Young or old, novice or experienced, you will undoubtedly enjoy the atmosphere of professionalism and kinsman-ship, as you will walk out of this two-day event with at least a dozen of ingenious, trustworthy ideas ready to be implemented in the classroom the next day.

  • Using film, literature, drama and electronic media for teaching English at all levels
  • Innovative approaches to teaching English at the secondary school level
  • New approaches to teaching English at the college and university level

The purpose of this conference is to bring together English teaching professionals from different countries to address the challenges of teaching English in the age of globalisation and multiculturalism. Nowadays, English teachers are often faced with multicultural classrooms or at the very least the task of preparing learners who are likely to be using their English skills to communicate with people from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This conference is designed to help teachers deal with the multicultural aspects of teaching English. It should also be of interest to those who are keen on learning about and sharing their experiences with turning the humdrum process of language teaching into a fascinating journey of student exploration.

October 20-22, 2006

The first two conferences took place in Samara (2001) and Narva (2003). At the conference in 2006 will focus on cultural contacts. We intend to pay attention to the problems and interactions of border cultures, and to study how the image of another nation and its culture are formed on historical, literary, folklore materials and other sources. The image of a foreign culture and its people largely determines the cultural strategic behavior chosen by an individual when dealing with a particular ethnos. Reconstructing the keystones of these images and understanding the causes that govern certain elements of these images will help understand many peculiarities of the Russian - Baltic cross cultural relations.
