The Times Higher Education (THE), which is considered the world’s most reputable compiler of university rankings, has published the most recent ranking of the best universities. In the 2019 ranking the University of Tartu continues in the 301st–350th band, while the results of European universities in general show a downward trend.
On Monday the University of Tartu sent admission decisions to 2,850 people who had applied for Estonian-taught programmes of the first level of higher education. Now they have to confirm acceptance of the student place within two days, i.e. no later than Wednesday, 17 July. Student places that remain vacant will be filled on a rolling basis until 19 August and those who get the admission decision will also need to confirm it within two days.

On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences and the University of Tartu signed a contract with the construction company Nordecon for the construction of a Narva Learning Center. Besides the cadets, also the staff of the Police and Border Guard Board, as well as the students of Narva College of the University of Tartu, will start using the study, training and accommodation building. In addition, the construction will include a sports complex with a swimming pool, which is also open to the public.
On Saturday, 1 December, the University of Tartu celebrates the 99th anniversary of the Estonian national university. At the anniversary ceremony, doctorates and honorary doctorates are conferred and the award for contribution to national identity is presented. During the week, many fascinating anniversary events take place at the university – for students, alumni and all those interested.
Today, on 26 April 2018, the 263-member electoral council elected Professor of Neurosurgery Toomas Asser as rector of the University of Tartu with 187 votes.
On June 1st 2018, Narva College finished its second year admissions round for international students, who want to study at full-time programmes. This year’s admission round is the second for the college, and it attracted many more prospective candidates than the previous one. If last year Narva College received 50 applications, then this year the number is more than 3 times higher: 181 applications (as many as 140 people applied for several programmes). College can admit maximum 20 students from abroad that makes the competition about 7 persons per place.
On April 19-21, 2018 Narva College of the University of Tartu opens its doors for international students who are coming to Estonia to participate in the International Student Research Conference, which is recognized as one of the longest standing student conferences in Estonia and is held on a yearly basis since 2000. Many talented students from different countries all over the world will come to share their opinions within the topic “Neglecting the boarders: 6Dimentions of EU-RUS relations”.

The workshop is held to discuss the challenges of polyculturalism and multilingualism to European education systems, the issues of multilingualism and plurilingualism, multilingual teaching including methods and practices, multilingual education institutions and minority language issues.

With great sorrow, the University of Tartu announces the unexpected death of Rector Volli Kalm on Saturday, December 23.
Volli Kalm was born on February 10, 1953 in Vändra. He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1976 with a degree in geology. In 1984, Kalm earned his PhD in geology from the Estonian Academy of Sciences after successfully defending his doctoral thesis "Formation, composition and usage of glaciofluvial deposits in Estonia."
From 1988-1989, he attended postdoctoral studies in the geology department of the University of Alberta.
At the extraordinary senate session on 27 December, the senate of the University of Tartu unanimously appointed professor Tõnu Lehtsaar as the acting rector.

On November 9-10, 2017, Narva College of the University of Tartu holds the International Youth Conference on Media gathering together experts, analysts and media producers from Estonia, Russia and Nordics to discuss and debate with students, scholars and young leaders over the modern information production and consumption. The conference is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers´Office in Estonia.
On November 14, 2017, Narva College of the University of Tartu, in cooperation with the USA Embassy in Tallinn, is holding a poetry workshop conducted by the American poet Heather Derr-Smith.
Meelis Luht, former management board member of Eesti Meedia Group, will start work as the Director of Administration of the University of Tartu on 21 August.
Rector Volli Kalm said the new director of administration has been in charge of several different areas of activity in his career and is a top leader with international work experience. We can see his capability as well as his desire and ambition to actively contribute to the implementation of the university’s development goals.
