Study programme

Dates: The courses are generally offered each year from 1 September to 15 December. Please note that the exact start and end dates may vary by a few days, depending on the official semester schedule of the University of Tartu.

B1 level

Students develop practical communication skills through lively, culturally rich topics such as personal identity, family and friendships, daily routines, leisure and travel, food and health, city life, nature, media, education, and key aspects of Russian history and society.

The course places strong emphasis on speaking, listening, and understanding authentic texts, helping students express opinions and share experiences with ease. At the same time, learners build a solid grammatical foundation, mastering essential case usage, verb aspects and tenses, verbs of motion, participles, and adjective forms.

By the end of the level, students can interact naturally with native speakers and navigate social and cultural situations in Russian with growing confidence.

B2 level

Students engage with complex and thought-provoking topics such as politics, economics, education systems, healthcare, labor markets, demographics, tourism, and the media in Europe and Russia.

The program deepens grammatical accuracy and stylistic awareness, covering advanced case meanings, verb government, participial constructions, and syntactic variety. Specialized practicums focus on academic and official writing, media language, and text analysis, exposing students to scientific, journalistic, business, colloquial, and artistic styles.

By the end of the course, students can analyze and create sophisticated texts, participate confidently in discussions, and express nuanced ideas in polished, professional Russian.

By the end of the B1 level course, you can:

  • Communicate confidently in Russian in everyday social, cultural, and study-related situations
  • Understand the main ideas and key details of authentic spoken and written texts
  • Express opinions, experiences, and plans clearly in spoken Russian
  • Expand your active vocabulary for real-life communication
  • Improve fluency and accuracy through a strong grammatical foundation
  • Feel comfortable interacting with native speakers in common daily situations

By the end of the B2 level course, you can:

  • Speak Russian fluently and confidently on complex social, academic, and professional topics
  • Understand implicit meanings, arguments, and attitudes in authentic texts and media
  • Participate actively in discussions, debates, and professional conversations
  • Write structured texts in academic, business, and journalistic styles
  • Achieve high grammatical accuracy and stylistic flexibility
  • Use Russian independently for study, work, and informed engagement with society and media

Course Fee

Standard fee for the entire course: € 2,400. It is also possible to take only some of the courses, and the fee will be calculated accordingly (1 ECTS = 160 EUR).

Housing, transportation, and meals are not included.

Students can choose between a student dormitory, private apartments, or staying with a host family. The Narva College dormitory at Paul Kerese 14 offers rooms at 125–250 EUR per month, while private apartments are widely available and host family stays provide a more immersive local experience.

Each registered participant will be asked to do an online test and a short interview with one of our teachers to determine if their language skills are good enough to manage during the course.
