The opening ceremony of the 2023/2024 academic year of the University of Tartu takes place on Monday, 4 September at 10:00 in front of the university's main building.
The ceremony will begin with an opening speech by Rector Toomas Asser, followed by greetings from Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas and Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas.
President of the Student Union Renar Kihho will welcome students on behalf of the student body, and Karl Eerik Kala, a 1st-year student of Law at the Faculty of Social Sciences, will speak on behalf of 1st-year students.
Participants can enjoy the performances of the Chamber Choir of the University of Tartu, conducted by Triin Koch, and the band Inerts: Tea Sööt (vocals, alumna of TalTech, architect), Reimo Kivine (acoustic guitar and vocals, UT alumnus in physical education), Ermo Leuska (guitar, UT doctoral student in molecular biology) and Mikk Kaasik (piano and vocals, psychology student at the UT). The band Inerts started largely thanks to the University of Tartu, as the founding members met during their university studies. In total, there are eight UT alumni and students among the band members, including two doctoral students and two medical doctors.
A live webcast of his opening ceremony will be available on UTTV.
