On January 18, a group of American students arrived in Narva to spend their next half-a-year studying Russian at Narva College. For these eighteen young students, the Russian course in Narva is a follow-up for their previous Russian studies in Moldova where they spent the first half of the one year intensive language programme.
These students are participating NSLI-Y programme that offers intensive language immersion for high school students and recent high school graduates. It is an opportunity to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programmes. The scholarship is awarded to only the very best students from all over the US who apply for the programme, regardless of their previous knowledge of the target language.
The group in Narva started in August in Moldova, when some of the students only mae their first aquaintance with Russian language. Today, they all manage everyday conversation in Russian. They have daily classes in Narva College where their language skills are further developed by the lecturers of the Division of Russian Language and Literature.
For the first month, the students are accommodated in the student dorm of the college, but the further period, they will move to local host families. To arrange accommodation in the host families for the programme period is a common practice in the NSLI-Y programme, to give the students an insight into local lifestyle and daily habits. The students can also practice their Russian with the family.
Narva College provides custom-made intense Russian language courses for groups of different size and language level. As the town of Narva has 97% of Russian-speaking habitants, it has a perfect environment for intense learning and language immersion.
